Purpose-Built for Critical Sample Preservation
This custom desiccator system was engineered for long-term, controlled-humidity storage of highly sensitive materials from an aerospace research program. The goal was to ensure an inert, moisture-free environment with robust mechanical performance and ease of maintenance.
The project required a triple-chamber stainless steel unit, capable of maintaining ultra-low humidity levels using nitrogen gas injection and pressure-relief balancing. The design was fully customized and validated through quality control testing by Sapphire Cleanrooms’ Engineering Department.
⚙️ Technical Overview
- Configuration:
- Triple stacked chambers, single-sided access
- 22” W × 16.5” H × 22.5” D per chamber
- Structure Material: 304 Stainless Steel (16-gauge)
- Window Panels: 6 mm tempered glass with lift latches (316 SS)
- Flow Control:
- Stainless steel flowmeter (0.4–4 SCFM, 100 psi max)
- Push-to-connect ¼” OD fittings (316 SS)
- Relief System:
- Stainless steel pressure-relief vents, 0.3–1 PSI range
- Mobility:
- 4 phenolic wheels (2 with locks)
- Double-bearing construction for smooth, non-marking movement
- Shelving:
- 12 custom stainless steel non-perforated trays
🔬 Performance Validation
Rigorous quality control tests were conducted on similar units (Job 10098) to assess performance under continuous nitrogen flow conditions. Here are the highlights:
Test at 1.1 SCFM:
- Initial Humidity: 16.3% RH
- Final Humidity: 0.2% RH
- Time to Reach Goal (<1% RH): 1h 3min
- Standard Deviation: ±2.9% RH
Test at 0.21 SCFM:
- Upper Chamber Final Humidity: 1.8% RH after 6h 18min
- Lower Chamber Final Humidity: 11.3% RH after 15h 57min
- Note: Nitrogen naturally rises, leading to drier upper chambers. Direct injection kits are available for uniform humidity across all compartments.
These tests confirmed that the system meets stringent aerospace-level requirements for moisture-sensitive sample preservation.
🧼 Maintenance & User Features
- Removable internal compartments and perforated panels for easy cleaning
- User-adjustable flow control to balance gas consumption and recovery speed after door openings
- Tool-free door replacement (secured with cap nuts and flat-head screws)
- Maintenance recommendations included in the user manual for extended product life and operational safety
🧪 Operator Considerations
- Use alcohol-based cleaners for stainless steel and non-abrasive soap and water for window panels
- Avoid over-pressurization: nitrogen input should not exceed 70 psi
- For guaranteed sub-1% humidity in all chambers, consider optional multi-zone injection upgrade
